Description

The minor brothers had established themselves in Narbonne in 1242. The bedside of their church did not date from the 14th century, and the two lateral chapels still present seem to come from the second half of the 15th century. The cloister galleries seem to be slightly more recent, while the claustral buildings, such as the refectory, the kitchen and the room, were probably not completed before the middle of the 16th century. In 1563, the refectory hosted the assembly of the States of Languedoc. During the Revolution, this vast ensemble was divided and sold in four plots: one included the church and the gardens to the west, the cloister was divided into two plots, and the fourth plot included entrance and various outbuildings. The order of Notre-Dame du Refuge, founded in Nancy in 1624, opened an antenna in Narbonne in 1844 and gradually bought the ancient buildings of the Cordeliers in the 19th century. Over the various transformation works, the church nave has disappeared, replaced on one side by houses, and on the other by a dormitory rebuilt with the original materials. The cloister was integrated into housing on three sides.
