Description

The Saint-Joseph church, which is one of the most successful buildings in terms of decoration, is in the south of Marseille. It is one of the forty churches built or enlarged by Monsignor de Mazenod after the restoration of the diocese in 1823. The plans of the church were asked of Pascal Coste in 1833. This building has the form of a basilica, and the facade was completed in 1864 by the architect Ferrié, from the drawings of Coste. In 1868, Henry Espérandieu rebuilt the gallery to accommodate the large cavea-coll organ and produced the caissons ceiling of the nave. The high altar and the ball were designed by Sainte-Marie-Perrin. The nave paintings as well as those of the side chapels were only completed until 1925.
