Description
The first castle was erected around 1026 on a cliff overlooking the late. François II of La Rochefoucauld, while preserving the old towers, built the current residence in a new style around 1520. A fire at the beginning of the 18th century led to the creation of the Louis XIV wing. Access to the castle is from the plateau, through a pavilion dating from the beginning of the 17th century. In front of the building extends a large flowerbed, highlighting the 16th century housing facade. A basin from Gaillon is in the center of this flowerbed. To enter the courtyard, you must go through the old fortified entrance. Two sides of this courtyard are surrounded by three levels of galleries. The third side houses the Louis XIV dungeon and wing. The last side is cleared and forms a terrace overlooking the city. Inside, a staircase serves all the places. The castle was restored in the 19th century, and certain sections, such as the chapel and most of the apartments (with the exception of the ground floor rooms), lost a large part of their original character.
