Description
The island served as a basis for the inhabitants of Jersey and Guernsey to carry out attacks on the continent. In 1720, it was decided to build a fort, the design of which was entrusted to Siméon Garengeau, the chief engineer of the fortifications of Saint-Malo and a pupil of Vauban. The fort includes a pentagon -shaped redoubt, a large battery and a small battery in the west, as well as two -story barracks. A surrounding wall, formerly surrounded by a ditch, offered a first line of defense in the East. A deck controlled access to the building. The garrison remained in place after the fall of the Empire, until its dissolution in 1873. In August 1944, the Germans removed the floors and all the wooden parts.
