Chambois : Medieval castle

Although it was officially recorded in 1200, the castle of Avrilly could have older roots, going back to the 11th century, according to its architecture. This fortification protects Évreux and monitors strategic roads. The size of the site suggests that it was a county fortress, which was the heart of a significant area of the counts of Évreux in Avrilly in the middle of the 12th century. Conquered by the French in 1199, the castle played a discreet role during the 13th and 14th centuries, until the start of the Hundred Years War, where it regained its strategic importance. In 1417, the fortress and the village were taken by the English, who destroy them. However, the commune of Avrilly still retains elements of its rich past today. The dungeon and the farmyard of the castle, as well as the scheme of the medieval village enclosure, leave their mark on the surrounding landscape. The fortress has undergone few modifications and constitutes a representative example of the Anglo-Norman architecture of the 11th and 12th centuries. It is also important to highlight its excellent state of conservation; The ditches system is intact and the imposing walls give an overview of its height.
