Description
On June 21, 1723, a fire ravaged over a thousand houses in Châteaudun. Jules Hardouin, responsible for constructions, was responsible for reconstruction. He developed a plan in the form of a chessboard, with a large place where there were public buildings and uniform houses. Place has a rectangular shape, and its large side is almost equal to the diagonal of the square formed by the small side. It was surrounded by shops with arcades. On both large sides, four large buildings were to stand up, protruding from alignment, and higher than surrounding houses. Two of these buildings are at the rear of the square, one of which is the town hall, built in stone in 1777. On the other hand, the two large pavilions which were to be built on the other side of the square were never made and were replaced by a post office dating from 1900.
