Description
The former Abbey of Landévennec was allegedly founded in 485 by Saint Guénolé. Throughout the High Middle Ages, and even during the Romanesque time, despite the destruction caused by the Normans, it was one of the most important centers of monasticism in Brittany. With the establishment of Sainte-Croix de Quimperlé, the abbey began to lose its importance, and its period of decline was marked by the introduction of themed, which led to the disappearance of the abbey title in 1781. The excavations carried out for many years revealed vestiges ranging from the 7th to the 18th century, creating a real palimpsest of great archaeological value.
