Description
Remains of the Gallo-Roman enclosure of Tours. At the end of the 3rd century and the beginning of the 4th century, the city of Caesarodunum was faced with a threat of invasion. Emperor Constantine has succeeded in restoring order and ordered the construction of walls capable of withstanding any new attacks. To accelerate the work, the amphitheater has been demolished and its materials were used to create a rampart four meters thick, composed of a filler drowned in mortar and covered with small appliance stones. The seats of this coating present, at regular intervals, a double cord of bricks placed flat which cuts them horizontally. The lower part retains fragments of capitals.
