Description
The hamlet of Hauts Prats is at an altitude of 1781 meters in the Queyras Regional Natural Park. The chapel was associated with the brotherhood of white penitents, the main chapel of which is close to the parish church of Saint-André in Ville-Vieille. A census of 1809 indicates that there were 220 white penitents in Ville-Vieille, among a total population of 1286 inhabitants identified in 1806. This chapel is dedicated to Saint Barnabé, which is the patron saint of weaks. Its name, which is not linked to penitents, could refer to a donor. A local historian mentions a reconstruction of the chapel in 1628, after it was destroyed in 1574 during the wars of religion. It was still rebuilt in 1764. In 1958, a renovation was carried out, covering its facades with a cement coating.
