Description

The diocese was established in 365 by Marcellin. In 794, the episcopal seat of Embrun was raised to the rank of archbishopric, but it was removed in 1801. Among the vestiges of the medieval fortified building, only the Brunette tower remains, integrated into the north wing. At the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century, the archbishops were built a building which is now part of the central wing. The south wing was built in the 16th century. Between the 17th and 18th century, the central wing was doubled and the south wing was arranged in residence. The whole made up of three wings delimits two courses: the court of honor to the west and the court of the outbuildings in the east. In the middle of the 19th century, the army, which occupied the site, began a major restoration, which continued in the 20th century.
