Description
Built in the 1930s by the architect Albéric Aubert, the hospital sanatorium illustrates the hospital construction movement which emerged in response to medical advances and the insufficiency of former establishments in the face of major epidemics. This building is part of the functionalist current influenced by the Bauhaus as well as by the ideas of Le Corbusier and Gropius, based on principles of functionality such as clarity, simplicity of forms, horizontality and the use of contemporary materials. This place is intended to become the future school of architecture of Clermont-Ferrand. Its large horizontal windows, the predominance of white, its fifth facade representing the terrace and its clear and formal design are typical of this architectural style. A concrete dome, partially translucent, will be illuminated again by the zenithale light when the blanket which blocks it will be removed. The site benefits from an exceptional location in the Puy de Chanturgue, rising in the landscape like a lighthouse. The hospital was acquired by the State in order to establish a school of architecture, a project led by EMOC.
