Lannemezan : Saint-Jean-Baptiste Church

This church seems to have been founded in the 12th century. The main structure dates from the Romance era. Subsequently, the choir and the bell tower were added. The vaults were partially destroyed and the roofs were renovated in the 18th century. The nave is made up of four spans, one of which is still preserved four columns engaged from the Romanesque time with decorated capitals (representing a kneeling martyr in front of its executioners, monstrous creatures and floral motifs). Originally, this part was vaulted as a cradle, but it was replaced by a false plaster vault. The choir, with a polygonal shape, is vaulted with six branches of warheads decorated according to the style of the 15th century, joining a sculpted keystone. It has a triumphal arch decorated with modern paintings. The bell tower is connected to the nave by a broken arch. The side portal is the richest part of the building, decorated on each side by four marble columns supporting concentric rolls. The capitals are also carved with narrated scenes.
