Description
The main irrigation canal extends from Ille-sur-Tet to Perpignan. To cross the natural depression in the south of the city, which separates the hill from Serrat-de-Vaquer from that of Puig-Joan, an aqueduct 300 meters long, 4.60 meters wide and 13 meters high was built. This work, known as the Arcades, is made up of 21 semicircular arches made of Cayroux stones, joined with lime. When Perpignan has become a large city, the construction of many buildings, improving roads and economic needs required a constant water supply. The first derivations in the form of channels date from the 12th century and continued in the 14th century when the Kings of Mallorca resided at the Château de Perpignan.
