Description
The project of a funicular connecting the lower part of the Station from Évian to Neuvecelle dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. The concession was granted to the Foncière company d'Avian in 1912. Its construction by the company Van Roll took place in 1914, and the service began in 1915. The railroad tracks, measuring 750 meters (designed by Burbach in 1907), serve six small stations: Lower station, Chat Source, Splendid Hotel, Royal Hotel, Mateirons, and Higher Station. The latter retains the original traction machinery. This funicular, disused since 1970, is the only one of its kind to use a rack -free cable traction. The superior station, made of wood and "chalet" style, was damaged by fire in 1991.
