Description

A chapel, led by the Capuchins and devoted to Saint Anne, was erected at the end of the 17th century. It was destroyed by the English in 1693, just like the church of the sailor of which it was part, then rebuilt to become the parish church named Sainte-Anne des Salines. In 1817, a cyclone would have ravaged the church, which was rebuilt in 1824, according to the date visible on its facade. As it was deemed too small, additions were made, including two chapels forming a false transept and a semi-circular choir. The blessing of these additions took place in 1866, which could mark the end of the work. Father Hurard, parish priest between 1869 and 1877, played a role in the replacement of the old wooden altars by three altars in white marble veined in gray. It was also this abbot who, since 1869, has built the Calvary on the hill which overlooks the village, attracting many faithful each year. The two altars of the chapels are based on a platform with a walk and consist of an altar tomb, two stands and a tabernacle. The altar in the North Chapel, dedicated to the Virgin of the Holy Scapulaire, is marked with the inscription: "Béraud Marbrier / Au Puy. Haute Loire (France) 1873 ”. The Saint-Anne altar, located to the south, presents the inscription: "Béraud Marbrier / Au Puy. Haute Loire (France) / 1873 ”. The high altar, devoted to the Sacred Heart, was inaugurated on June 28, 1878 by Monsignor Carménée and bears the inscription: “Beraud Marbrier / Au Puy. Haute Loire. France ". Other Martinique churches also benefited from six other marble altars signed by the sculptor Marbrier Béraud between 1869 and 1883. In 1991, the municipality of Sainte-Anne launched the reconstruction of the concrete bell tower, followed by the restoration of the covers and the facades from 2003, under the direction of Gérard Jacqua, architect of buildings in France (1976-2009). The restored church was inaugurated on September 19, 2006 by Mgr Michel Méranville. Renard, Joseph. Martinique: History of the parishes of origins to separation.
