Description
The monument dedicated to Guynemer is one of the rare monuments remaining in honor of an important historical figure in French military aviation. It also illustrates the contribution of the Longvic (Air Base 102) air base during the First World War. Georges Guynemer, who lost his life during an air fight on September 11, 1917, was one of the main hunting pilots of the Great War. In 1928, a project for a monument in his honor was launched. Inaugurated on July 25, 1932, it was designed by the architect Gaston Paris. It includes an imposing column with a bronze relief made by Ovide Yence on its main face, as well as two horizontal masonry sections on each side. At the rear, a hatch had been integrated to light the lantern at the top, which was modified in 1966.
