Carnoët : Saint-Gildas chapel

Small building in the shape of a Latin cross, it consists of a nave with a sidewall to the north, a transept and an apse with several faces. A small openwork bell tower on the gable of the western facade, with a stone arrow, seems to date from the 17th century. The large windows of the nave and the apse are surmounted by gables, decorated with rampants with hooks and gargoyles. The arrow was rebuilt in 1757. Inside, the vault was made up of a wooden frame. A carved and painted wooden fence dating from the 16th century presents representations of the apostles and two scenes from the life of Christ. The entry that separates the nave from the transept shows Christ on the cross, surrounded by his mother and Saint-Jean. This chapel could have been founded by a lord at the beginning of the 16th century. Being close to the fortress of Tossen-Saint-Veltas, it is likely that it was the private chapel of this castle. This building seems to have been fully completed during the same campaign around the year 1500 and was allocated to the workshop of Philippe de Beaumanoir, an active architect in the Trégor region.
