Description
Although its origin is unknown, this bas-relief could have been a sign for an inn called Saint-Georges. In the 16th century, there was a Saint-Georges house in Nîmes, but its exact location remains not found. This bas-relief presents two crowns, one with the coat of arms of France, and the other divided between France (Lys flowers) and Brittany (Hermine). This suggests that it dates from the last years of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. The sculpture is located above the front door. In a rectangular setting, a knight in armor, mounted on his horse, plunges his spear into the mouth of a dragon. On the right, on a bunch of rocks, a pray figure, eyes raised towards the sky. This iconographic motif is enriched by two ECUs in hugs.
