Description
The oval form of the place is the result of a revision of an initial project dating from 1797, which envisaged an open hemicycle. The final plan was validated in 1806. This location was beyond the ramparts of Toulouse, which were destroyed in 1827. Wave terrains along the ramparts were largely occupied by houses surrounded by gardens. The Capitouls then decided to clean up the surroundings of the city by building a place near the ramparts. From the start, a uniform style for the facades was imposed. Around the square, the ground floor of the houses included a series of arches where stores were.
