Description
The bridge was built between 1544 and 1632. The plans for its completion were made by Jacques Lemercier, who also designed the Lion's heads (which were not made) and the Arc de Triomphe at the western entrance to the bridge (demolished in 1868). This bridge is the only one to have survived the floods of the Garonne thanks to its design. Its shape is not horizontal, which avoids the formation of a dam. It is asymmetrical, rising from the side that comes out of the river curve which makes a 90 ° angle at this location, which helps direct the strongest current under the highest arches. Its width protects the batteries against current forces, thus reducing the risk of collapse. Each battery is preceded by a beak and is equipped with disgusting. Construction and finishes are in bricks, while the batteries, arcs and disgusting are made of stone.
