Description
In 1283, Father Taillefer, who was the leader of the Cistercian abbey of Nizors, founded the Bastide de Boulogne. This was designed according to the traditional Bastides model, with a church in the center and a public square surrounded by arcades. The construction of the church began at the time of its foundation, but was completed later. Originally, it had a rectangular shape, and side chapels were added in the 15th century. The base of the square tower constitutes a vaulted porch, supported by large square pillars. The arrow which stood at the top of the bell tower was struck by lightning in 1883 and was rebuilt in 1890. The lower section is one of the rare remaining examples of the architecture of the 14th century bastides.
