Bordeaux : Building

The idea of creating a royal square and a uniform facade along the platforms of the Garonne took time to materialize. In 1746, the intendant Claude Boucher obtained the agreement of the Jurats to establish the first quay. In 1729, Jacques Gabriel presented three proposals. In 1731, he completed the construction of the customs quay and the facades of adjacent buildings. After the death of Boucher, Tourny relaunches the project with the help of Gabriel's son, Ange-Jacques. In 1748, the monumental perspective was set up on the initiative of Aubert de Tourny. This project consists of a harmonious architecture which extends the Place de la Bourse, formerly Place Royale, along the river. It includes a ground floor and a meal forming bases, all framed by a series of semicircular arcades, followed by two square floors surmounted by a shame with the mansard, pierced with stone skylights. The base is highlighted by refers and rich sculptures in the keys to the arcades. Although certain facades have lost their supports or their wrought iron balconies, they retain their character thanks to their original frames and tears. Stores have settled on the ground floor, which sometimes impacted the arcades.
