Description
The theater was erected between 1787 and 1788 by Mathurin Crucy, a pupil of Boullée, in a neo-classical style inspired by Palladio. In 1796, a fire ravaged the room and behind the scenes. It was reconstructed identically between 1811 and 1813, with the exception of the peristyle, the vestibule and the side walls which have been preserved. The room underwent several modifications, first in 1829-1830, then in 1844-1845. After 1835, extensions and transformations took place between 1865 and 1880, as well as new renovations between 1913 and 1930. The room was renovated one last time in 1967-1968. The main facade has a peristyle made up of eight Corinthian columns, surmounted by eight statues representing the Muses (the ninth is on the stock market…).
