Description
The citadel was built according to Vauban's plans in 1668. It is an irregular Pentagon that extends to the countryside. Between 1680 and 1682, the Schramm barracks were erected, and the construction of the alleys store took place in 1775. In 1702, the Citadel esplanade was developed for walks, but a part was transformed into an English garden in the 19th century. The buildings inside the citadel have not changed, while the exterior was fortified by a series of glacis. The polygon of genius appeared in the 19th century in front of the three external bastions of the citadel. Almost all the buildings of the inner square of the place of arms date from the 17th century, including the royal door, the chapel and the arsenal, which is the most significant building of this set because of its size and its architectural value.
