Description
Aristide Maillol, a sculptor from Banyuls (1861-1944), created monuments to the dead in four cities close to his place of birth: Banyuls, Elne, Port-Vendres (see notice PA00104186) and Céret. The Céret monument was ordered in May 1919 and was inaugurated in 1922. The statue, carved in light gray sandstone and entitled "La Pain", represents a woman seated with an arm folded supporting her head. A bronze version of this statue was installed in the Carrousel gardens in Paris in 1964. The Céret monument underwent degradations over time.
