Perpignan : Church of Old Saint-Jean

The church was consecrated in 1025. It seems that two previous churches existed at this place before that of 1025. The latter had a single nave and a transept, with a semi-circular apse at its end. The analysis of the vestiges of the old bell tower indicates that it was built, at least on two levels, towards the end of the 11th century. Halfway through the 12th century, the portal of Notre-Dame Dels Correchs was made at the base of the bell tower; The north wall of the first floor of the bell tower was pierced with a triple arcature with columns, creating a forum over the crossroads of the transept. At the same time, the apse was completely renovated. The dome vault of Notre-Dame Dels Correchs also seems to date from this period. At the beginning of the 13th century, the vault of the Saint-Michel chapel, which dated from the end of the 11th century, was redone and the gallery was modified. The main portal, located in the south, is probably from the start of this campaign. Between 1269 and 1290, several chapels were added, as well as in the 14th century. Saint-Jean le Vieux had become a collegiate church since 1102 and remained until the consecration of the new Saint-Jean church in 1509.
