Corbère : Castle

The castle appears as a block with a tower to the west. Two wings of building surround him. To the northeast, an elongated tower serves as a dungeon or a tower of the tribute, forming a third building which is connected to the north wing by a passage in a small turret. This castle includes three levels: the ground floor with vaulted rooms and various annexes; the first floor which is intended for housing; And the second floor that houses both living spaces and defense facilities. It is difficult to identify the different construction phases due to the modifications and destruction that the building has suffered. However, it seems that the great hall and its outbuildings were built before the two north and south wings, and that the tower lying in the east came after. The current entry court would date from the same period or slightly later. The original entrance was at the foot of the large tower, leading to an underground passage which led to a spiral staircase. At that time, the chapter room was probably not covered and represented the central courtyard of the castle. Since the 10th century, the structures have been regularly modified, but the whole retains a medieval aspect of the 13th and 15th century. The defense elements have practically disappeared, with the exception of the slots of the elongated tower.
