Description
The village which was called Vilanova in Cerdagne changed its name for Villeneuve des Escaldas because of the popularity of hot sources nearby. Vilanova is mentioned for the first time in 1165. The building as we see today seems to have been built between the 11th and 12th century, probably in two stages, as the separation between the two chapels suggests. Subsequently, the side walls were raised and the nave was endowed with a cradle vault. Later, a tin-backing with two large bays surmounted by a small one was added to the Western wall, supported by buttresses. The west door was restored in 1728 and the outdoor arc was redone. Finally, in the 19th century, sacristies and a brick turret were added against the southern wall. The south door has retained its original appearance with its initial frames.
