Castelnou : Notre-Dame Church

Consecrated to Notre-Dame, this church located in the cemetery should not be confused with that which is in the castle of Castelnou, which was the place of a priory having received donations in the 12th century. The single nave, devoid of chapels, is extended to the east by an apse in a semicircle, which is narrower and lower, covered with channel tiles, just like the nave. A modern sacristy was built slightly at the angle, northeast of the apse. A square bell tower, also modern, was erected at the southwest corner of the nave. The southern gate consists of two semicircular exterior rolls and a rectangular door surmounted by a lintel which itself is overlooked by a full tympanum and a semicircular arc. Impost is a continuous banner that turns to each pedestal. The two old leaves each have six horizontal crosspieces in wrought iron with spiral scrolls. Other spirals complete the decor in a non -symmetrical way, simply juxtaposed. Empty spaces are decorated with double scrolls in C or S -shaped scrolls, varying in shapes and dimensions. The set is decorated with round head nails, and the lower crosspieces are decorated with chiselings. Above this door, a painted sundial indicates the year 1828.
