Description

The Wall of Lions and the Rampe des Crottes, as well as the Henri IV and Sully pavilions, are the last remaining traces of the Château Neuf and its layout in terraced gardens. This complex, created at the end of the 16th century under the reign of Henri IV, became the main residence of the king to Louis XIII. Abandoned by Louis XIV in favor of Versailles, the site has gradually been abandoned. In 1777, Louis XVI gave his brother the castle, the Count of Artois, who decided to have him demolished in 1784 to give way to a new neo-classical building which was never built, designed by Etienne du Perac and Thomas Francine. The chapel has a decor dating from the 17th century, with a 19th century sub-decor.
