Description
The Abbey of Saint-Savin was established at the beginning of the 9th century at the place where the tombs of two Christian martyrs, Savin and Cyprien, who lived in the 5th century were found in the 5th century. The current abbey church was built between 1040 and 1090, in the second half of the 11th century. In the 16th century, the abbey almost was destroyed. However, the arrival of the Congregation of Saint-Maur in 1640 allowed the abbey to experience new impetus, with the reconstruction of abbey buildings and cloister from 1682.
