Champniers : Saint-Martin Church

It is a Romanesque building that has kept its original choir. The nave as well as the chapel to the south, located in the first two spans of the west, date from the 15th century. In the 19th century, the architect S. de Mérandot restored the bell tower and the roof. At this same period, the paintings of the choir and the apse were refreshed. The western facade has a flamboyant Gothic style portal, with torus in torus supported by polygonal capitals decorated with foliage patterns. This portal is surmounted by an hug arc, framed by two pinnacles with florets. Inside, the nave and the southern chapel have vaults with cavet ribs, based on capitals and faces decorated with fantastic figures. The walls are covered with 15th century painted decorations. In the apse, we see a Christ in glory surrounded by the four symbols of the evangelists, as well as Saint Martin and Saint Georges, and the martyr of Saint Blaise. In the nave, the scenes of the Annunciation, Saint Michael terraging the Demon, the Crucifixion and the Last Judgment are represented. Finally, in the southern chapel, we find the Last Supper and the Martyr of Saint Sébastien.
