Civaux : Saint-Gervais Saint-Protais Church

The church, dating from the 12th century, was built at the place of an old Gallo-Roman structure which probably dates back to the 5th century, a vestige of which is visible at the base of the bell tower. This bell tower was oriented according to the axis of the previous structure, which differs from the orientation of the nave. The external walls of this apse are made of small materials, mainly arranged in the form of diamonds. The bell tower, which consists of two levels with arcatures, is separated by a frieze decorated with bricks. It ends with a pyramidal arrow resting on a square base, with animal sculptures with angles and serrated patterns. The 12th century church is made up of a nave accompanied by aisles, the nave being vaulted in cradle and the aisles in edges of edges. Access to the aisles is by four semicircular arches that are based on columns.
