Description
The priory was established at the beginning of the 12th century by Audebert de la Trimouille, who offered half of the site, known as Mas de Villesalem, with two hermits, Geoffray Gastinelli and Bertrand. Subsequently, he was transferred to the nuns of Fontevrault. The priory remained a conventual place of life until 1405 and was led by a perpetual prior until 1612. After that date, following the introduction of the reform of the Abbey of Fontevrault, the priors became triennial. The construction of the church probably started around 1150, starting with the southern apse, but it remained unfinished in the upper parts. The vault of the crossroads and the transept was carried out in the 13th century. The southern apse was first erected to serve as a chapel for the priory, and its decor is very elaborate.
