Description
Created during the Revolution at the site of an old iron mill dating from the 15th century, the Catalan of Montgaillard forge was transformed into 1860 into a carriageman. This transformation has preserved most of the structures and the hydraulic system while integrating new equipment such as martinets and warming ovens. Metallurgy using wood, nicknamed "indirect" because iron was produced without going through fusion, was characteristic of the region of Ariège Pyrenees. The originality of the process resided in the use of a trompeting blower. Tools such as the vertical hydraulic wheel, the camshaft and the planted hammer were used for the tailchaser. The buildings that house them are built in thick rubble, typical of the rural architecture of the region. The whole was acquired by the Department of Ariège in 1987.
