Description
Mirepoix, which was burned by large companies, was rebuilt at the end of the 14th century and was surrounded by a fortified enclosure in 1372. The city plan, inspired by the Bastides, included three doors. The air gate, which is the only one still in place, gives on the west side, the houses having replaced the surrounding wall without exceeding it. The tower, type "open to the throat", exceeds this line. The door was closed by shutters with a harrow at the front. Two archères are above and another on each side to protect the wall. The city coat of arms, created in 1817 by the astronomer Vidal, were integrated above the opening.
