Description
The only vestige of the housing known as the windmill probably dates from the beginning of the 19th century, a period marked by the proliferation of windmills in the Caribbean islands and the import of West Indian workers into the sweets of Guyana. This mill, an isolated rarity, was devoid of any sweets and had vertical rolls on the ground to facilitate the unloading of sugar cane. Of dimensions similar to those of the West Indian mills, its conical tower measures 8.50 meters in height and 8.50 meters in diameter at the base. It is located at the top of a hill which was covered with cane fields until 1945. The walls, 1 to 1.30 meters thick, were built in eggs of reddish, alveolar and well assembled stone, with the interior covered with a plaster based on coral lime. The openings of the openings and the interior niches are made of imported materials, creating a contrast with the beach sandstones and the bricks. Inside the tower, there are two floors with a right staircase. At the bottom of the hill, there remains a Buchanan steam engine, which was in service from 1882 to 1945 to activate the rolles intended to grind the canes.
