Voutezac : Sailing chapel

The chapel is located in the center of the village formerly known under the name of Orbaciac. This place belonged in the 11th century to the Abbey of Beaulieu-sur-Dordogne, then, at the end of the 12th century, at the bishopric of Limoges. The original chapel would have housed a precious chalice dating from the crusades. The salient had a vicariate founded in the 15th century by Guillaume de Lasteyrie du Saillant, who was active until the Revolution. The small sanctuary, dating from the 14th century, consists of a single rectangular nave covered with a semicircular vault, lit by four windows located in the eastern part of the southern facade. The bell tower of the western facade was built in the 17th century. The interior was completely renovated in 1978. The stained glass windows, which embellish the windows, were designed by Marc Chagall and produced by the master-glassmaker Charles Marcq. These stained glass is the last installed during the life of Chagall and contain very few figurative elements.
