Description
The prison was built between 1854 and 1867 by the architect Jacques-Jean Esquié. It consists of five districts surrounded by galleries which overlook a central courtyard, all radiating around a rotunda. The only entrance is by a small portal in a neo-medieval style, which houses the administration offices and employees' accommodation. The facades use classic materials and styles of the public architecture of Eskié, with elements inspired by the Middle Ages, especially in the military and fortified style, while presenting great austerity and a concern for economy. In addition, modern techniques such as using iron, melting and zinc have been integrated. Finally, Saint-Michel prison is also a memorial site linked to the Second World War and the Resistance.
