Description
Fruit of a competition organized by the city of Toulouse in 1965, the monument was inaugurated by the mayor, Pierre Baudis, August 19, 1971. Designed by the Toulouse agency "Atelier des Architectes Associés" (composed of Pierre Viatgé, Michel Bescos, Alex Labat and Pierre Debeaux), he combines architecture, sculpture and audiovisual. Located at the southern end of the Frédéric-Mistral aisles, opposite the old headquarters of the Gestapo, the monument is thought of as a route, which passes under the aisles to come out in the garden of the plants. At the end of this course, a committed concrete tumulus divided into three crypts, dedicated to refugees, tortured and shot. Inside, images, planned since departure, are projected on the walls. At the entrance to the tumulus, a self -supporting structure, designed by Pierre Debaux, consists of four metal tubes supported by metal cables.
