Nîmes : Square house

This building is at the intersection of the two main roads, the Cardo Maximus and the Decumanus Maximus, at the location where a forum was generally present. This monument was dedicated to Caius César and Lucius César, the adoptive sons of Emperor Augustus. It represents a typical example of Roman architecture with its pseudoperiptery style, where half-columns imitate an open side gallery, as well as its podium with vertical walls on which it rises. The square house was surrounded by a courtyard with a portico. There remains a fragment of the entablature, the cornice and the bases of part of its columns. The ornamentation is of Corinthian style. Between the 13th and 15th century, the square house served as a town hall. In 1670, it was sold to the Augustins, who made it a church. After the Revolution, she first welcomed the departmental archives before becoming a museum in 1823.
