Vals-le-Chastel : Saint-Paul Church

The castle and its chapel are mentioned in the spicillegium brivatense from 1078. The church probably includes Romanesque elements, but the whole was redone and modified in the 15th century. In plan, the building consists of three spans, including that of the bell tower-porch, plus the stately chapel located to the north. The span of the bell tower-porch is made up of two vaults of warheads, followed, in the nave, of a square vault of square shape. The other two vaults are four branches. The stately chapel opens onto the nave by a broken arch arcade. The ribs of the war vaults display a simple cavet and end in penetration, in accordance with the 15th century tradition. Those of the porch are based on lamp asses. In terms of decoration, there are small stalls from the 15th century and paintings on the vault of the stately chapel. These have a central motif representing Christ or the Virgin, surrounded by celestial figures, angels, as well as lay people and religious. On the walls, characters hold phylacers with Gothic writing. These paintings seem to date from the restoration of the church in the 15th century.
