Description
The abbey was established in 1124 by Isembaud de l'Étoile and joined the order of Cîteaux in 1149. As a direct branch of Pontigny, it is one of the rare foundations of this order in the Haut-Poitou. It was in a state of ruin in the 15th and 16th centuries, but was almost entirely rebuilt in the 17th century, before gradually deteriorating in the 18th century. Sold during the Revolution, it was transformed into agricultural exploitation, while religious buildings were looted and abandoned. This Cistercian site is protected due to its historical importance and the architectural quality of its ruins. Protection covers both religious structures (such as the converted church and building) and agricultural facilities (halls, farm, gate, mill).
